Taking down the book sale is a fast-paced, fascinating process. At 3:30 p.m. on Sunday Charly makes the announcement, "Folks, the book sale is closed! Please take your purchases to the cashiers. There's one here by the back door and two in the lobby. Thanks for coming!" The diehards amble slowly towards the exit.

The volunteers, however, do not wait for the customers to clear. As soon as Charly finishes speaking, they start in. The boxes for repacking have been assembled and are waiting outside the back door. (Thank you God for good weather on Sunday!). The vast majority of whatever books are left get repacked more or less by subject.

As a box is finished, it is taped, labeled, and left where it is. As soon as the tables are clear of those books, the tables come down. The books underneath are packed. Out in the hall the packing is fast and furious too. Customers try to secure one or two more
as they go by to the cashiers. But at some point the cashiers have to close down.

In the Specials room the books are packed carefully in order to preserve their value.  Many go back to our Amazon storefront site (and the higher prices there!). Some go back into storage for a future sales opportunity.

By 5:30 p.m. on Sunday evening, the majority of  the work is done. As the room clears, the boxes of packed books are stacked along the back wall to await their ultimate destination on Monday. Charly's not above taking a little bit more money from the volunteers after close-
out! On Monday, those books will be picked up by various 501(c)(3) charities who have requested donations. It is a win-win for all concerned.

We could not do this without our wonderful volunteers. As the blogger looked through all the photos of take-down, it occurred to her that almost every Friends volunteer she knows is present at take-down -- and working hard! What a great group to be associated with! If you'd like to join us next time, e-mail us!
