The Show is Dark

Both of our Amazon1 and Amazon2 sites are dark this week. That means that our extremely able, talented and generous volunteers who run them are otherwise occupied -- as in taking some family time! That will give them time to recharge their batteries and will give the Friends of the Reston Regional Library time to accumulate more wonderful donations to put on the sites for sale.

In the meantime, the Ongoing Sale is available at the library. These are books that are donated that are too 'hot' to save for a sale. They may be topical or timely, or might be library discards that we want to make available to you right away. (One of our guiding principals for the Huge Semi-Annual Book Sale is to present only the books in best physical shape which the library discards often do not meet).  The bookshelves holding these on-going treasures are at the end of the hallway going towards the meeting rooms - near the public restrooms. There are 3 tall shelves, full of a variety of books. As you stand gazing at these shelves, our magazines for sale are behind you to your right.

The prices on the Ongoing books are the same as the Semi-Annual Used Book Sale. They start at $1.50 for hardbacks, $1.00 trade paperbacks, and .50 for small paperbacks. You pay at the Circulation Desk.  So the next time you're in the library, go past the tax forms and stop by to the Ongoing Sale to see what's there.  It is always changing, and there's no due date on these books! (And here's a tip -- we generally restock on Thursday!)

Building A Future

The Classical Orders of Architecture, published in 1991, stands in a class by itself in terms of teaching modern architects how to incorporate the classical into their designs in a manner that changes their designs from merely functional, to functional and timeless. There are two reviews of this book on Amazon, both of which give it 5 stars. This is a great gift for any architect and hard to come by. Our copy is paperback, and appears to never have been used. It's
$25 on Amazon1.

Speaking of architects, The Man Watching: A Biography of Anson Dorrance, calls him the architect of the 'greatest college sports dynasty ever.'  You've never heard of him? Well, you must not be into soccer!  Dorrance has been the coach of the UNC Womens' Soccer team for years and has the wins and credentials to back up the claims of the front cover.  This copy is signed by Dorrance as well as the author. It's $18 on Amazon1.

Let us know what you think about our selections, our pricing, our commentary and anything else that's on your mind. You can e-mail us or comment on the blog. We look forward to hearing from you!

Snuggle Up Weather!

Who would have thought that on the 2nd of March we'd be seeing scenes like this outside our windows in Reston? What a beautiful last gasp of winter! The snow is light and fluffy and easy to shovel, which is good because there was a LOT of it on my driveway. But having shoveled it off, the blogger is now ready to find some good books to read, so I'm heading over to Amazon1 to see what's new.

A Stranger to Command heads the list at Amazon1. This is the prequel to an immensely popular title, Crown Duel, by Sherwood Smith. The reviewers on Amazon give this 4 and 5 stars. This copy appears to not have been read, and is $24.

Also at Amazon1 you can also find a non-fiction travel adventure in the tale of One Man Caravan by Robert Fulton. In 1932 Fulton saddled up his  motorcycle and set off for an adventure around the world. His experiences are detailed here. Eleven Amazon reviewers give him 5 stars! This paperback appears to never have been read, and is $15.50 at our site.

Remember, if you are a local current Friend of Reston Regional Library, we are happy to make these books available to you exclusive of shipping. Please e-mail us to make arrangements.

What?  You're NOT a member of the Friends? You can easily remedy that by e-mailing us as well!

Enjoy the reads and enjoy the snow!
