Whole Foods Loves Your Library!

Yesterday, out of the blue, we received an e-mail from our local Whole Foods Market. It said:

I am pleased to let you know that we have selected “The Friends of Reston Library” to be a recipient in this quarter’s “Nickels for Non-Profits” donation.

Each quarter we designate two local non-profits and place a donation box at the front of the store. Customers usually receive a nickel for bringing their own reusable grocery bag but we give them the option of taking a wooden nickel instead and dropping it in the box to aid these charities. We will have “The Friends of Reston Library” on this box for at least the next 90 days and then donate the amount given by customers.

Please encourage anyone who comes to shop at our store to take the bag redemption in the form of a wooden nickel and drop it in your slot!

So now you know what to do!

1. Shop Whole Foods

2. Take your reusable bag in and pick up a wooden nickel

3. Drop it in the Friends box!

Do You Love Your Library?

If you thought the budget news from the County was bad for FY2010, it's about to get worse for FY2011. That's why the Community Meetings are being held across the county. The Board of Supervisors want to tell people what the forecast is, and to hear what is important to you.

The meetings are open to the public, but you must register to attend. There are two in our area:

Saturday, October 24 - Reston Regional Library

(10-noon)

Thursday, October 29 - South Lakes High School Cafeteria

(7-9pm)

Unfortunately, politicians being who they are, they will react and apportion the budget depending on who they hear from loudest. You remember the old squeaky wheel theory? In the past, the libraries have been underrepresented in this sort of meeting. In other words, people have NOT shown up to support the need for the library to have a healthy budget. So, your local library NEEDS you.

It's not just books that we get from the library -- it's a wealth of information. The libraries provide places to meet, they are packed on weekends and afterschool with tutoring appointments. They have conversation classes meeting there. They provide free internet access for those who don't have it elsewhere. They can order books for you from across the country. They infuse our children with a love of reading. I'm sure you can think of many more services you receive from the Reston Regional Library. Multiply that across the county and the answer is clear.
