Lovely Kitties, Lovely Titles

More lovely cat books. The encyclopedia would be a great gift for a student who loves cats -- challenge him or her to step up to the next level of reading and knowledge!

Who remembers the rail cars with Chessie on the side? This is the story of that precious icon. A GREAT gift for a person who not only appreciates cats but who is pretty excited about railroads as well!

See you at the Cats Pajamas sale!

Theorem Painting and Garfield

Here are some more goodies from our cat treasure trove.

Theorem painting was a decorative art of the early 1800's. Done with stencils, called patterns or theorems, all the work was theorematical. Fruits and flowers in bowls and baskets were most typical of the period, which lasted until about 1850. Each stencil was carefully cut, placed on white velvet, the openings painted in with a stiff brush or wool squire and details completed with a fine sable brush.

This theorem painting of a resting kitty is by Sandy Honan whose works grace many country-style restaurants throughout the Southeast U.S. It originally retailed for $125 and is framed in a decorative wood-carved frame.

Garfield? If you're a fan or a collector, you'll know that this Garfield statue by Enesco has sold for $45 in the past. What will you pay for it as a patron of our Cats Pajamas Sale?

On Saturday July 19, come to the Reston Regional Library at 11925 Bowman Towne Drive in Reston during regular library hours to see these and other great buys. If you're a Friends member and you see something you like now, e-mail us at for details on price and to purchase early!

Cuneo Furnace & Doug Sweet

You're right -- these have nothing to do with cats -- except that they are available as part of our "Cats Pajamas" sale.

The hearts by Cuneo Furnace are beautiful. This is the text from their promotion materials, "Our work embraces classic Italian canework techniques, filigrana, latticinio and vetro a retorti. Each color and strand is a separate piece of glass cane or ribbon. The design is shaped and then heated and drawn to reduce it in size. " You can find out more at You will also discover there that these are quite expensive. They originally retailed at:

Large 2¼ " $34.00
Med 1¾" $26.00
Small 1¼" $18.00 ea.

The blown glass orb by Douglas Sweet looks like a coral reef. One can gaze at this for hours and still be amazed at the beauty. This orb is 2.14 inches in diameter and comes with a stand. You can purchase one at full price from Doug for $98.

However, if you are interested in purchasing any/all of the hearts or the Orb, you KNOW the Friends of Reston Library will make you a better deal than full retail. If you want to wait until the Cats Pajamas sale (and take a chance on missing the items), that's fine. If you want to purchase them early, you need to be a Friends member. Send us an e-mail at RestonFriends@gmail and we'll take care of all the details.

The Cats Pajamas sale will be Saturday, July 19, during regular library hours, at 11925 Bowman Towne Dr., Reston, VA 20190.

Not Just Books!

Our Cat's Pajamas sale is quickly approaching and here's a little secret . . . it's not just books! The collection we received included numerous cat lover items from costume jewelry to framed artwork. We're going to feature some items over the next couple of days. Please pardon the photography -- there are no pros on our staff!

And PLEASE note, this is a RARE exception to our rule that we don't sell things other than used books. We are not going out and soliciting collections of anything, no matter how unique or wonderful. We simply do not have the volunteer manpower to staff what that would require. Of course, if you have a collection of first edition classics like Hemingway and Twain, we want to talk to you...but as I said, it is a RARE exception.

About the art -- the stained glass pieces are called "Lightstreams" and are created by Jack Roseman, an artisan from Florida. His pieces of similar size retail at $40 for the smaller one and $70 for the larger. You know we'll give you a better deal than that, but you'll have to come to the sale to see!
The 12 panels are from some hand-painted Egyptian notecards by Mel and Jan Fleck. They are hand-pulled, embossed and individually painted note cards from original designs. We have 4 sets of the cat designs and 1 set of 6 dog designs. The 12-card sets retailed for $22, and the dogs for $12. But you know a good deal awaits you at the library on July 19!

See you there!

Little, Warm, and Fluffy

Okay, not all cats are little, but they are all warm and fluffy! So if you love them, or love books about them, come to the Cats Pajamas sale on Saturday, July 19 at Reston Regional Library.

Here's a taste of some more offerings! The first is a difficult-to-find board book in French, part of the "Le Chat" series. It's $38 on Amazon. The second is a beautifully presented, completely unused address book. Fully illustrated -- it's a perfect gift book for the cat lover on your list! It's $14 on Amazon. Much nicer than a computerized database in which to store 'friends'.
See you on the 19th!

Non-book donations

Non-book donations are gratefully received!

We occasionally get asked how people can help support our programs if they're not in our immediate geographic area, or don't necessarily want to donate books they have read.

It is easy to be part of your library programs! We do accept monetary donations. Because we are a 501(c)(3)-chartered organization, any money you donate to us is deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law. We will recognize contributors/supporters in our quarterly newsletter.

And, if you’re cleaning house, in addition to books we accept donations of other types of media as well:

  • CD’s
  • VHS
  • DVD’s…
  • Puzzles…
  • Cassette books on tape…

    Amazing Amazon Storefront

We often receive donations of beautiful, rare, or otherwise extremely interesting books. Some we can sell at our semi-annual used book sales. Others -- well, they require a wider audience in order to be matched with the perfect buyer. We set up an Amazon storefront last year for those special candidates and the books have flown out! One of our dedicated Friends members keeps the storefront current, deals with customers, and ships the books. Her efforts have been appropriately rewarded by very high reviews from buyers.
The books we post on Amazon range from very pricey due to rarity, to not so pricey -- but still more difficult to sell at their real value in a used book sale. In a non-profit organization, good stewardship requires that we try to maximize the value of these special books in order to have funds to help the library with programs and events. As dollars tighten up, it is even more important for the Friends of the Library to have a healthy base of funds from which to accomplish our mission.

Don't worry -- we aren't putting all the 'good stuff'' on-line and leaving the 'dregs' for the hometown buyers. On the contrary, we receive so many donations of special books that this allows us to display many more of them than we can physically handle at a used book sale. Between sales, it is nice to post some of the books here as well and give you, our friends and Friends, a look. I encourage you to click on the link to our Amazon store front and prepare to be amazed!
    About these books:

The Rhododendron is a two-volume set, filled with gorgeous illustrations. Volume I (1958) has 18 beautiful full-color reproductions from paintings by Carlos Riefel. Vol II (1962) has another 18 full-color reproductions from paintings by Carlos Riefel. The line drawings in the botanical text are by Susanne Kolasse. Rare and beautiful, it is priced at $250.

The Alpine World of Mount Cook National Park is full of awesome photographs of this famous New Zealand wonderland. It is priced at $20.
