HIDDEN TREASURES

During set-up for the Spring 09 Semi-Annual Friends of the Reston Regional Library Used Book Sale yesterday afternoon, it happened again. One of our eagle-eyed volunteers noticed a book in the general offerings that seemed like it might be worth more than $1.50. It wasn't a pretty book, and really didn't distinguish itself in any way. She just had a 'feeling.' (Thank you C.R.!)

As it turned out, the book was valuable. It is the Index Islamicus, 1905-1955, a companion to the Index Islamicus, 1956-1960 that we have on our Toplist. We haven't priced the older volume yet, but the one on the toplist is $50.  (If you're interested in the 1905-1955, please e-mail us.)

So what is my point?
  1. YOU get a good deal with us: There are only three copies of the 1956-1960 Index available on Amazon.com right now. The least expensive, an ex-library copy, is $75. Our is not ex-library, and although it isn't "pretty", it's in better condition than one with ex-library stamps. YOU get the benefit of that by us offering it for $50 at our local used book sale.
  2. There are still hidden treasures to be found in the book sale. We don't see everything. And while we reserve the right to adjust a price if a book has been mispriced, it is possible that you will go home with something of greater value than any of us saw.
  3. ALL OF OUR BOOKS are of greater value than we charge. Anyone who can buy good condition hard-backed books with intact dust jackets for $1.50 is getting a great deal.
So, whatever you have planned this weekend, make sure it includes stopping by the Reston Regional Library for the book sale. Didn't you watch National Treasure?
